With its idyllic location to Lake Ontario and riverside setting, The Oakville Club prides itself on the numerous sailing activities.
The Yachting membership is busy year-round and in the summer months creates an exciting atmosphere at the Club with, regatta’s, cruises and races.
Finish your evenings enjoying the sunset on our Dockside Patio.
DOCK SAFETY
Children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and wear a life jacket at all times on the Dock and in the Dock Area. Running, playing or “horse play” on the Dock and Dock area shall not be tolerated and will result in being asked to leave the area immediately.
SAIL PAST
The Club’s yachting community marks the official opening of its season with a Sail Past event. To salute the arrival of the season, we start with the “Commodore’s Poolside Brunch” with on-the-water activities the afternoon. Please reserve through the Activities Desk, at ext. 0.
CRUISING
While many Members will cruise on their own at various times throughout the summer, there are four “group” cruises. These events – organized by the Yachting Committee – involve a coordinated multi-boat visit to another Club. Often such an event will involve a reciprocal visit with boats coming to Oakville while we are at their facility.
RACES
For racing purposes, the Club fleet is divided into three divisions. The Committee organizes a number of races through the year. At the end of the season, trophies are awarded to the winning boat in each division as follows:
Division Boat type Trophy
A PHRF > 200 Finch-Noyes
B PHRF < 200 Procor
C Previous winners Mauna Kea
Another trophy –Reiffenstein, is awarded to the boat with the best-corrected time overall in the Reiffenstein race/cruise event.
The Oakville Club boat with the best results overall in the Oakville Club Regatta receives the Oldershaw Trophy.
The Bobyk-Totten Trophy, not necessarily for racing, is a special recognition award for a sailor who in some way has represented the Club particularly well in the yachting world.
The newest addition to The Oakville Club trophies is the Gurth Bramall Participation Award that is given to an exemplary sailor who participates in yachting events with dedication and enthusiasm.
SAILING SCHOOL
Interested in learning how to sail? Our neighbours across the water, The Oakville Yacht Squadron, offer courses for junior sailors from age 8 right up to adults! Please contact the OYS Sailing School at (905) 338-9379 for more information or to register.
SAILORS' SQUASH
The sailors’ squash group plays in round robin format at 8am on Saturdays. While this event becomes less active in the summer months, some sailors are often interested in a game.
VISITORS
An important dimension to yachting activity is the welcome we receive when we visit other yacht clubs. Similarly, we provide excellent hospitality at the Club to the crews of visiting yachts.
PUMP OUT AND FUEL
There is a pump out facility on the east side of Sixteen Mile Creek just north of the Club property. It operates with part-time hours. The closest on-the-water fuel pumps are at Bronte Harbour. Dinghy outboards can be refilled at the Oakville Power Boat Club.
STEM TO STERN
The Yachting Committee has brought “Stem to Stern” back to life again. This newsletter is designed to offer you tips, tricks, upcoming events and all the latest sailing stories. Stop by the Activities Desk to pick up the latest issue.
